9 Common Causes of Construction Accidents

Scaffolds

There are many causes of accidents on a construction site. Many are often attributed to some form of negligence and may involve unsafe work areas, misuse of tools and equipment, and failure to use protective equipment. The following discusses the nine most common examples of construction site accidents.

Unsafe Working Areas – Injuries due to slip and falls are among the most common on a construction site. Unsafe conditions include uncovered holes or trenches and exposed stakes and rebars (which implement hazards to those working or walking above them).

Falling Hazards – A common injury that occurs when a worker near an open-sided floor focusing on his work, steps backwards or to the side without looking. Another falling hazard occurs on stairwells with no guardrails. In this kind of accident, workers frequently land on their heads or shoulders.

Misuse of Stepladders – This is one of the leading causes of injury and long-term disability in Washington. An injury can occur when a worker falls from a tipped-over stepladder. Another accident that can occur with stepladders is when tools are left on the top platform. When someone moves the ladder, the tools fall on someone’s head. Using household ladders on a construction site can also lead to accidents, as these types of ladders cannot take the weight and stress of a construction worker with tools.

Roof Construction Falls – The number one cause of death in construction occurs where no fall protection is provided. Falls can occur when anchors (designed to provide fall arrest with an attached lifeline) are not properly attached or more than one lifeline is on a single anchor.

Scaffolding Problems Washington State regulations mandate that a “competent person” must supervise erecting scaffolds. This is someone capable of identifying hazards and who has the authority to take prompt corrective measures. Despite these regulations, scaffolding accidents still occur through unsafe access to scaffolds and tools and other materials falling off scaffolding and injuring workers.

Collapsed Excavation Walls and Trenches – In the state of Washington, collapsed excavation walls or trenches kill an average of two workers each year. The weight of soil (2000-3000 pounds per yard) prevents a trapped worker from breathing, leading to death within minutes.

Power Tool Accidents – These accidents are frequently caused by not using appropriate eye and ear protection. Nail gun injuries have increased each year making eye injuries quite common. It’s not surprising given that a nail comes out of the gun with the equivalent force of a .22 caliber bullet. Also, not having proper guards in place on the power tools can lead to cuts and amputations.

Lifting/Body Straining – The number one cause of injuries, disability claims and medical costs in construction are soft tissue injuries-strains, sprains and chronic injuries. These are a result of lifting with the back instead of using the legs and not using panel lifters when carrying sheets of drywall, plywood, or siding.

Vehicle Accidents – Forklift accidents are responsible for workers’ deaths each year in Washington. A common accident occurs when turning or maneuvering the forklift with the load raised. Another dangerous construction site vehicle is the dump truck. A frequent accident involves the dump truck backing up and hitting a pedestrian.

As you can see, a construction site can be quite dangerous. However, many of these accidents can be avoided through common sense and protective measures. Prevention begins with adequate awareness and a properly maintained working environment that is safe and secure.

Scaffold – WR Pathway! (1.08s)

I am the supreme master of Scaffold! Watch as I get 1.08 as I got the first time travel, and although I made 2 mistakes (SPOT THEM!), I managed to finish this level at 1.08 seconds and at 24.72 seconds of time travel bonuses, out of 25 seconds available. Close call because of these mistakes, but well done from my side. According to my camera, I did after almost 200(!) runs, this excellent recording. And so, I bring you this superb video. Enjoy!

Defining Arthritis

Scaffolds

We all have mornings when we wake up a bit stiff, a bit numb and a bit older. We all get the achy feeling that comes from working too hard in the garden, sitting too long in front of the computer or many times in my case sleeping in an awkward position. From time to time, we have all suffered pain because we’ve lifted a heavy object in a slightly wrong way. Even a particularly ferocious sneeze can cause a twinge of discomfort. But arthritis goes far beyond these occasional aches and pains.

The number one cause of disability in people age 55 and older is of course arthritis, and to much of our surprise, there are also many cases found within our youths these days some found at ages as early as the early teens. The term arthritis is usually attributed with pain. Pain is usually the first sign that something is in fact wrong with the human body.

The phenomenon that we commonly refer to as arthritis includes a number of diseases that result in inflammation, pain and stiffness, primarily in the joints and connective tissues. In many cases, these diseases affect other parts of the body as well. Arthritic disorders may be are chronic, but some, such as gout, are intermittent. If you look up the definition of arthritis you will find it to be inflammation of the joints. Joints are made to move and bend but they have fluid which surrounds the joint to prevent the bones from rubbing together with movement. The problem begins when this fluid becomes displaced or damaged and allows the bones in the joint to rub against each other. This causes pain, swelling, and can even cause permanent joint damage.

There are many reasons why the fluid becomes damaged. One of those reasons for example would probably be being overweight. The accumulation of body fat can cause significant damage to the joints and knees. The heavier you are the more pressure you exert on your joints and fluid is pushed out to the side and that unfortunately allow the bones to touch. When this happens for a long period of time, it can cause joint damage and ligament tearing. In many cases surgery is necessary, and with time, a knee replacement may become a necessity.

Some Common Ways To Prevent Arthritis

There are several steps you can take to prevent arthritis but unfortunately not everybody will be able to prevent or prolong the arrival of this illness. As usual a good way to prevent any illness including arthritis is a healthy eating diet. A healthy diet helps decrease the amount of fat in the blood which causes blocked arteries. Also most health experts say the fact that maintaining a healthy weight is one of the best things you can do for your body.

Another arthritis deterrent is regular exercise. A well maintained exercise program increases flexibility in your joints and provides strength to your muscles and bones. Regular exercise is also another way to help maintain a healthy weight. People who already have arthritis can help their symptoms by staying active. Arthritis tends to make joints stiff and painful and often the pain prevents that individual from participating in the activities that cause pain. Keeping on track with a moderate exercise program can help stiff joints become more pliable, therefore causing less pain.

Another good way to prevent arthritis is to protect the joints at all times. When lifting something heavy learn the proper technique so you can avoid undue joint stress. If an object is too heavy, don’t try to be a hero, ask for help. Often it only takes one incident to cause joint damage which could cause you pain for the rest of your life.

Dr. Allevable’s Unbelievable Lab – the Bone and Heart Modules

Dr. Allevable and Regenerobot invite you into their laboratory as they investigate the new and exciting field of regenerative medicine! Get this movie at Green-Eye Visualization: tinyurl.com The human body is vulnerable to many kinds of injuries—bone breaks, skin burns, and heart attacks , and regenerative medicine can help us heal faster by enhancing the ways that the body heals itself. Dr. Allevable takes you along on a tour of the bone and points out how old bone cells are constantly being replaced by new bone cells, a process that is called remodeling. These new cells are adult stem cells and they come from the bone marrow. Medical doctors study the process of regeneration to develop new methods to help the bone heal faster and stronger. Dr. Allevable also talks about the heart and how this tissue is not as good at healing itself. The heart is the strongest muscle in the body and it circulates blood, which carries oxygen and important nutrients, to all the different parts of the body — including all the cells in the heart itself! Cholesterol can be harmful because it can block blood vessels. If heart cells don’t get the oxygen and nutrients they need, they will die and interrupt the rhythmic beating of the heart — causing a heart attack. Doctors are studying ways to help the heart heal itself with adult stem cells and scaffolds. Produced by Regenerative Medicine Partnership in Education (www.sepa.duq.edu) and funded by a Science Education Partnership Award granted
